The RAV4 Prime’s 2.5-liter and electric motor combine for 302 horsepower, a healthy amount that makes the SUV feel lively and eager on the road. The 2023 Toyota RAV4 is arguably the best plug-in hybrid SUV available, with 42 miles of pure electric range and performance that’s far beyond that of the regular RAV or its direct competitors. It’s cheaper at the entry level but ends up being close to the same price as the Toyota in higher trims, though that doesn’t factor in the Prime’s frequent dealer markups. The Hyundai Tucson is the RAV4 Prime’s closest competitor, but falls short on electric range, with 33 miles versus the Toyota’s overachieving 42. Honda and Nissan don’t offer plug-in versions of their SUVs, but the hybrid CR-V is one of the more engaging variants to drive. The long-running five-seater competes in a seriously crowded segment that includes the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and many more.
Pricing for the SE starts at $43,675, including a $1,335 destination fee, and the top XSE starts at $47,545. The RAV4 Prime otherwise continues as it was last year with two trim offerings, SE and XSE. The new interface is less distracting to use and far easier on the eyes. There’s only one significant change, and it will greatly improve the ownership and driving experience: a new infotainment system. While the regular RAV4s gets some new equipment and a new Woodland trim for 2023, Toyota has mostly left the RAV4 Prime alone. Standard all-wheel drive with the Prime makes it an all-weather contender and a surprisingly competent dirt trail companion, and Toyota includes a load of great safety tech, making it a top family car for weekend adventures. It augments the already expansive RAV4 lineup, which also includes gas and (non-plug-in) hybrid variants, along with several trims. The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Prime is a compact crossover with a fuel-sipping plug-in hybrid powertrain and great standard features.
